  • Join a writing group.
  • Write what is important to you.
  • Read authors who inspire you.
  • Keep a diary or journal.
  • Set aims for your writing e.g. this year I am going to write a set of short
  • stories.
  • Put time in your schedule each week for writing.
  • Write where you are most productive e.g. café, home.
  • Be honest and true to yourself in your writing.
  • Send early drafts of your writing to members of your group for peer reviews
  • and feedback.
  • Writing is like baring your soul. Just remember that feedback on writing is not
  • meant to offend or to put you off writing. It is meant to make your writing the
  • best it can be. You make the final decisions about what feedback you take on
  • board.
  • Set a timeline for your writing goals.
  • Be clear regarding your reasons for writing.
  • Make writing a priority.
  • Engage a mentor for your writing who closely reads your writing and gives
  • feedback and is also someone to discuss writing issues with
  • Send a summary of your writing to publishers who you feel will be interested
  • in your type of writing using the writer’s yearbook.
